Why We Recommend Galvanized Steel Fence Posts Over Wood Posts

When homeowners shop for a new wood fence, they usually focus on the pickets, style, or stain color. But the most important part of any fence is the part you rarely see—the posts. They are the foundation that keeps your fence standing straight and strong for years to come.

Wood Posts Eventually Break Down

Whether your fence is built with pressure-treated pine posts or cedar posts, both are still wood. While pressure-treated lumber contains preservatives and cedar naturally resists rot better than many other species, neither material is immune to years of moisture exposure.

Water gradually enters the wood through natural cracks, fastener holes, and exposed end grain. As temperatures change, the wood expands and contracts, creating larger cracks that allow even more moisture inside. The area where the post meets the ground is especially vulnerable because it remains exposed to damp soil, irrigation, and rain.

Over time, this can lead to:

  • Leaning fence sections

  • Sagging gates

  • Loose posts

  • Splitting wood

  • Rot below ground where you can't see it

Why Galvanized Steel Posts Are Better

Galvanized steel posts eliminate the biggest weakness of traditional wood posts—they don't rot.

Because steel doesn't absorb moisture, it won't swell, split, or decay like wood. The galvanized zinc coating protects the steel from corrosion, allowing it to remain structurally strong for decades.

That means your fence is more likely to stay:

  • Straight

  • Strong

  • Resistant to high winds

  • Easier to maintain over the years

One of the key advantages of this fence system is its long-term maintainability. If the wood portion of the fence ever needs to be replaced, the existing steel posts remain fully usable. The rails and fence boards can be removed and replaced using the same posts, with no need for new digging or pouring cement. This makes future repairs or upgrades significantly easier, faster, and more cost-effective.

The Best of Both Worlds

Many homeowners assume steel posts will be visible, but modern installation methods allow them to be hidden behind the wood pickets. You still get the beautiful, natural appearance of a cedar fence with the long-term strength and durability of galvanized steel.

Our Recommendation

At Red Lion Fencing, we believe a fence should be built to last—not just look good on the day it's installed.

That's why we recommend galvanized steel posts whenever possible. They provide a stronger foundation, require less maintenance, and can dramatically extend the life of your investment.

A stronger fence starts with a stronger foundation.
